We are just learning of a lawsuit that was filed against the city of LA and the head of the police department’s Professional Standards Bureau. The lawsuit, filed by an LAPD police captain, alleges that she was sexually harassed after “the department failed to take immediate actions to stop distribution of a nude photo purporting to be her but was not.”
The police captain says she suffered from physical as well as mental and emotional injuries and that her reputation was damaged due to what happened.
At the center of all of this is a sexually explicit photo in which people claimed was her but was not. The photo was widely distributed to other LAPD employees, often with derogatory messages about her in a text. The lawsuit claims that the department did not take steps to protect her once it was reported.

The Modern Workplace
We have learned so much as a country over the last two years, especially as the “Me Too” movement has exposed the darker side of many industries. Unfortunately, sexual harassment is still rampant in many workplaces and it is aided by modern technology.
In the case above, it is likely that the police captain had no idea these images and messages were being sent until dozens of people had them. With so many messaging systems, communication of this type of material is instantaneous. It also allows for a kind of curtain for people to hide behind as they continue to harass others. Since it is not out in the open, somehow people think it is okay. It is not okay.
California law protects anyone from being a victim of sexual harassment in the workplace. Everyone has the right to feel safe when they go to work.
Please know that sexual harassment takes many forms. It can be:
Physical and inappropriate touching
An expectation of sexual favors for promotion or raises
Verbal communication and nonverbal gestures
Text and email communications
It does not matter who you are or what position you hold in a company, you do not have to tolerate being sexually harassed.
